The Sacred Valley, near the Inca capital of Cuzco. is home to three of the most important craft markets of Cusco: Pisaq, Ollantaytambo and Chinchero. The Sacred Valley was one of the main points of extraction of natural resources, an agricultural production center, and the best place for corn production in Peru. The Urubamba River, running 100 km (62 miles) from Pisaq to Ollantaytambo, was the main water source and a great benefit for the region.

Pisaq market: It is best known for the colourful and lively Indian market every Sunday. Crammed into the main square of this small town is a bustling market comprised of two parts: the local market for, of, and by the Indians, taking place in the streets around the plaza and a constant scene of comings and goings, and the handicraft market, located in the plaza itself, with a wide variety of textiles, carvings, jewellery, ceramics, pots and other items. An important and traditional activity is the Sunday "March of the Mayors", when the mayors of surrounding towns come together to March to the church, with the leader blowing a conch shell to announce the beginning of services.

Ollantaytambo: One of the few vestiges of Inca urban design that can still be appreciated. It had a great importance as temple and fortress, and is a magnificent example of monumental Inca architecture. The town has been built on top of original Inca foundations and is the best surviving example of Inca town planning.

Chinchero: Chinchero is a quaint Inca village with an impressive colonial church ushering you into what is believed to be the birthplace of the rainbow. Here you will find another traditional Sunday Indian market, though not as large as that found in Pisac. In Chinchero you can enjoy beautiful views of the Sacred Valley, with the Cordillera Vilcabamba as a background, and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay adding additional glory to this picturesque landscape. The village of Chinchero is relatively unchanged since Inca times, with adobe houses dotting the land and locals going about their business in traditional dress.
