Machu Picchu is a pre-colonial Inca city situated 2,430 meters above sea level (7,970 ft). You will find several tour packages to Machu Picchu. There are two main ways to reach this city, via train or by trekking the surrounding areas. If you decide to opt for the train you can either depart from Poroy, the closest train station to Cusco, and it is approximately a 3.5 hour train ride. You can also opt to board the train from the Ollantaytambo train station in the Sacred Valley, making it approximately a 2 hour train ride to Machu Picchu. If you prefer to trek the Inca trail or perhaps take an alternative trekking route, it is traditionally a 4 days 3 night journey.
Whichever option or tour package to Machu Picchu you decide, whether to take a scenic train ride to Machu Picchu, or walk an original Inca trail, at Casa San Blas Boutique Hotel we will make all the arrangements necessary to make this a trip of a lifetime. We will coordinate any and all arrangements needed to complete this journey, from your train reservation, hotel stays, private guide, trekking tour to Machu Picchu and restaurant bookings. You will have the opportunity to visit the archeological site and be one of the lucky few to experience and witness the lost city of the Incas. Upon the completion of your visit we will once again take care of all the arrangements for your return to the city of Cusco.
If you think about taking the Inca Trail, be aware that it has a limit of 500 travelers per day, this is the reason you should organize your trip to Machu Picchu ahead of time. The trail is traditionally 4 days/3 nights in length, initiating at a location called Km 82. You will average 13 kilometers of walking per day for the first 3 days and finally 6 kilometers on the final day. During this trek you will have the opportunity to visit a number of archeological sites along the Machu Picchu route and appreciate the change in landscape as you walk up and down the mountainous terrain. Essentially you will ascend from the Sacred Valley of Cusco at 2,800 meters above sea level (9,186 ft) and reach the highest point at 3, 800 meters (12,467 ft) on the second day, arriving at the Pacaymayo campsite. On day 3 of your Inca trail to Machu Picchu, you will begin to descend from Pacaymayo into the Wiñay Wayna archeological complex and campsite of the same name to spend the night. On the final day there will be a slow descent along the east side of the Machu Picchu mountain where a set of steep steps will lead you to Intipunku, the Sun gate. Past the crest of the Sun gate is the lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu, a glorious site. Just the views will make the walk worthwhile. Upon arriving you will be able to visit the ruins and explore the city that to this day continues to fascinate the world.
NOTE: The trail is closed in February for cleaning and maintenance.
