INTI RAYMI: The Festivity of the Sun

Every June 24th in Cusco, the Andean World celebrates the Festivity of the Sun or Inti Raymi.
A ceremony in honor of the Sun God that takes place from the time of the Incas, each winter solstice.

Some chronicles indicate that the Inti Raymi was instituted by the Inca Pachacuteq around 1,430 AC.

The Inti Raymi represents the celebration for the rebirth of the sun to start the new year, which coincides with the begining of the agricultural season.

It is said that the celebration lasted several days with rituals, sacrifices, dances and praises to the Sun God.

With the Spanish conquest, the Inti Raymi stopped being celebrated for around 400 years.

In 1944 Faustino Espinoza Navarro, intellectual and renowned artist from Cusco, wrote the script for the current version of the inti Raymi, based on the chronicles of Garcilaso de la Vega, on the initiative of Humberto Vidal Unda, also an intellectual from Cusco, who had represented the cultural movement called Indigenismo, who promoted its staging.

Today, the Inti Raymi is represented by thousands of artists in a scenery that includes: The Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, in down town Cusco, where the celebration begins, the Plaza de Armas of Cusco and the esplanade of Sacsayhuaman.

If you are in Cusco during this Festivity (June 24th), save the day to participate in El Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, about seven (07) minutes walking from Casa San Blas Boutique, and witness the beginning of this celebration.

Then you could follow the parade to the Main Square (Plaza de Armas) where you can appreciate the second part of the ceremony and then you could move to Sacsayhuaman (nearby the city), either by walking or driving, to observe the most important part of this staging. Remember that you can reserve a space in tourist seats where you can have a privileged view of the details of the party and access to the script of the ceremony in your language, or you can participate together with the locals.

Thousands of travelers get excited by the prays and joy of the people expressed in the music and dances. Do not lose this opportunity.
